Shimek State Forest is located within ten minutes of our cabins. We have four hundred acres of Shimek State forest  right outside the cabin area, (within walking distance.) This forest is know for its deer and turkey  populations. It is also beautiful for hiking and taking walks with your family.

Des Moines River is only two miles from the cabins. This river is unique with its many sandbars and fishing holes. It winds along a picturesque setting of old Iowa with lots to see and enjoy.

We built a new lake in August of 2007. It will be ready to fish (catfish) in July of 2008. It has been stocked with large catfish ranging from 2-10 pounds.

The Mississippi River is located within 20 minutes of the cabins. The widest part of the Mississippi is one mile wide and located in Montrose, Iowa. Lock and Dam 19 is located in Keokuk, Iowa (about 30 minutes) and is where barges come in and out and travel up and down the river.

Eagles also make their homes at Lock and Dam 19, and in the winter they can be seen from this area diving for fish on the river.

If you like to look for antiques, or just enjoy visiting quaint shops where you can watch rug looming or pottery making, or watch fudge being made, then check out the town of Bentensport. Bentensport is about 25 minutes from our cabins. And since you are heading that direction, you might want to drive a few more miles to the town of Cantril. There you will find "The Dutchman's Store." They offer candy and spices sold in bulk form, as well as beautiful material for quilting. Organic fruits and veggies are sold as well as a variety of plants and flowers.
